Raymond Lau Poo Seng’s path to success as an artist has not been easy.
Afflicted with Tourette Syndrome since the age of 7, Raymond has lived with this neurological disorder for much of his life, and is given to sudden, involuntary movements or utterances.
Born under humble family circumstances, Raymond did not fare well in the competitive Singapore school system, except in art and music.
Raymond then went on to complete his Bachelor degree in Fine Arts in 1995 from the University of Tasmania.
Awards – UOB Painting of the Year
Recognition for the mastery of his young talent culminated in the Young Artist Award for 2001, bestowed by the National Arts Council of Singapore. His life should serve as an inspiration to those born with disabilities, but beyond that, his paintings should continue to speak as a Singaporean soul to illuminate the human condition.
Raymond was honoured with the UOB Painting of the Year award in 1993 and the National Arts Council Young Artist Award in 2001.
His works can be found in the collections of President S.R. Nathan, Ambassador-at-Large Professor Tommy Koh , Professor Arthur Lim, Mr Tan Swie Hian, Ms Chng Seok Tin, Singapore Management University, United Overseas Bank and the National Arts Council.
Raymond belongs to a new and emerging generation of Singaporean artists at the forefront of Singapore’s evolution into a Renaissance city.
A vocal and colorful individual, Raymond excels in both realist and abstract renditions in oil and acrylic. For Raymond, painting is therapeutic as it helps him find peace and fullness. It is not surprising therefore that his body of work reveals a gentler, softer side of an outwardly bold and brassy individual.
