Wong-Mah Jia Lan aged 84, owned tin mining, shipping, newspaper and hotel businesses with her late husband Mr. Wong Kwok Leong. She is the eldest daughter of the Ipoh, Malaysia tin mining family.

She has a heroic, righteous and decisive character. She has the characteristics of being gentle and considerate, compassionate, benevolent, a good wife as well as a good mother in the eyes of her husband and children.

She was a national bowling player in Singapore and had won many championships in international competitions between 1975 and 1976.

Advised by renowned painting artist Dr. Chen Wenxi , she also loves art, dabbling in Chinese and Western paintings., She learned calligraphy from Shi Xiangtuo, finger painting from Wu Zaiyan, and ink painting from Chen Jianpo. She is good at finger painting of pines and lotus flowers.

She was a national bowling player in Singapore and had won many championships in international competitions between 1975 and 1976.

Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) has received a donation of SGD1 million from Mrs Wong-Mah Jia Lan, one of Asia Pacific’s top philanthropists, to launch a student training Academy. Named the Wong-Mah Jia Lan LEAD (Leadership Excellence & Affective Development) Academy.

About 1200 SUSS students will benefit from the Academy’s suite of leadership and community learning initiatives that champion social good that have lasting social impact to communities in Singapore.

SMU Donor, Mrs Wong Kwok Leong, affectionately known as Mama Wong to beneficiaries and friends, is an active philanthropist.

She has contributed to many charitable projects, both locally and around Asia, in areas ranging from religion, community and culture to medicine, music, sports and education.
